MARKUP BASICS

Quick answers.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup divides gross profit by cost. Gross margin divides gross profit by the price charged. If a job costs $100 and you add 25% markup, the price is $125 and the gross margin is 20%.

What does this calculation leave out?

Sales tax, income taxes, processing fees, and any costs you don't enter. Include relevant travel or other direct costs in the input if applicable. Gross profit is not net income.
